Flames from the Buckley Draw Fire light up the mountainside above Provo as smoke drifts into Utah Valley.

A wildfire erupted on the hillside south of Provo around 5 p.m. Sunday and continued to burn well into the night.

The blaze started in Buckley Draw Canyon, located just south of Slate Canyon, and by 9 p.m. had spread to roughly 400 acres with no containment, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Fire crews from Utah County Wildland, Provo Fire, and the U.S. Forest Service rushed to the scene. Aircraft, including helicopters and planes, were deployed to drop water and fire retardant throughout the evening.

As of late Sunday, Provo City officials confirmed that no evacuation orders were in place, but urged residents to stay clear of the area so crews could safely carry out firefighting operations.

Provo Police also advised the public to avoid Slate Canyon and Mountain View Parkway to allow emergency teams room to work.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran posted on X.com that no homes or buildings were in immediate danger, but he noted that full containment could take several days.

“Fire crews have done an outstanding job so far and will keep up their efforts until the flames are extinguished,” Beltran stated.
